This Virtual Stuff Could Drive Me Crazy !!
Posted on January 24, 2011 | No CommentsWhat IS it about virtual environments? What can they really offer learning, training and business that makes the effort worthwhile? How do I decide which virtual platform is “right” for me? How do I sell the idea to my leadership? How do I sell the idea to IT? How do I introduce new people to the environment when they come in? Just what the heck is the ‘real’ deal on ‘virtual’, anyway? THOSE are the questions we have been thinking about as we have prepared for the TranceFormational Learning Experience 1 – The Medieval Encounter…the 12 week learning experience on our islands in Second Life. While based in SL, we will also talk about (and visit) platforms that represent most... Read More -
Did You Feel That? The Avatar Just Evolved
Posted on January 22, 2011 | No CommentsOne of the questions following our presentation at the Summit was about the technical ability to control a virtual avatar through something other than a mouse or buttons. I mentioned that there was some work being done using the Wii controllers, but expected to see much more happen now that Microsoft had released the Kinect motion-sensing technology on their gaming systems. Gee, it’s fun to be right once in a while…take a look at this: http://blog.knowsense.co.uk/blog It may be time to begin thinking about what it could mean to add the physical presence to those virtual participants in our activities and events. What could this offer us for demonstrating physical activities, equipment or machinery? What might this offer us in... Read More -

Virtual, Immersive, Engagement, Oh My: A First Step to Understanding
Posted on January 18, 2011 | No CommentsAttending the 2011 Virtual Edge Summit reminded me of conferences I attended in my field of education and training about 5 years ago. That is when we were first seriously exploring the potential of the ideas of “virtual”, and “3D” as tools to enhance learning and training. Last week, if I only closed my eyes and replaced the term “event” with “courses”, I was having that same experience all over again. The past 5 years have given those of us in eduction and training the opportunity to dig deeper into the virtual and 3D environments, and enabled us to provide some answers to many of the questions I heard last week in Las Vegas. I realize that answers appropriate for... Read More -
Attending Virtual Edge Summit Again, Virtually
Posted on January 7, 2011 | No CommentsVegas is so close to me as a Tucson resident that I thought I might attend the Virtual Edge Summit in person, but once again I will be attending, testing and evaluating the Virtual Edge Summit zeitgeistvia the virtual venue of my desktop Mac.I would love to network with both physical and virtual attendees. The virtual meeting experience is usually a great way to gain information while maintaining a but not the best one for networking with other attendees. That is the primary reason I still invest time and money in virtual world platforms. If you are attending the VE11 Summit and are a professional or business woman interested in using virtual worlds, there will be a meeting on January... Read More -
